CHAMPIONS AGAIN: Yamaha wrap up record-breaking 11th WorldSSP Manufacturers’ title
The Japanese brand introduced a new machine for 2025, the Yamaha R9, and it instantly brought success back to Yamaha
The Manufacturers’ Championship in the FIM Supersport World Championship has been wrapped up by Yamaha following Stefano Manzi's (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) Race 2 victory at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. With a new bike introduced for 2025, the Yamaha R9 has gone on to enjoy immediate success in WorldSSP as the Japanese brand become the most successful manufacturer in the Championship.
TAKING THE CROWN BACK: Yamaha end Ducati’s run
Yamaha had been on a streak of six consecutive titles until 2023, when Ducati – with the Panigale V2 in its second season – claimed the crown two years in a row. With a new ruleset opening up the Championship to more machines, Yamaha introduced the R9 for the 2025 season and it paid off for the Japanese brand. 14 victories out of 18 wins after the French Round mean they wrapped up the title with three rounds to spare.
MANZI AND ONCU LEAD THE CHARGE: 14 wins between the duo
While Manzi’s victory wrapped up the title, and his nine wins so far helped take a big step towards it, Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) also played his part with five further wins. It means the pair are the two riders who have contributed to Yamaha’s 430-point haul so far in 2025, but the Yamaha R9 has allowed other riders to showcase their talents too. Lucas Mahias (GMT94-YAMAHA) has often been a podium contender, while rookie Aldi Mahendra (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) has been impressive in his first season. Roberto Garcia (GMT94-YAMAHA) was a mid-season replacement and immediately in the top ten, while Alberto Surra (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) was able to score a podium on his debut as a replacement rider.
STILL TO PLAY FOR: can Yamaha make it a clean sweep?
While the Manufacturers’ Championship is secured, Yamaha are still in play for two more titles: the Riders’ Championship and the Teams’ Championship. With 150 points left on the table, it’s likely it will go to either Manzi or Oncu (69 points between them), with Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) and Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) 130 and 146 points back respectively; still in mathematical contention but would need everything to go their way. In the Teams’ Championship, Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team lead the way on 364 points, 18 ahead of Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing. PTR Triumph Factory Racing are third, 74 back, but both riders can score for this title, meaning plenty of points still available across the final six races.
MAKING HISTORY: a record-breaking 11th title for Yamaha
After their six-in-a-row run between 2017 and 2022, Yamaha had gone level on titles with Honda with the two brands winning the Championship ten times each, with their nearest rivals, Kawasaki, on three. With the Yamaha R9 and the success of both Manzi and Oncu in 2025, Yamaha were able to secure an 11th Manufacturers’ Championship and become the most successful manufacturer in the category.
THE VIEW FROM YAMAHA: “Congratulations also must go to our Motorsport Division colleagues for developing a race bike that could win in its very first season”
Michael van Zomeren, Marketing & Motorsport Director, Yamaha Motor Europe, said of the title win: “This is a hugely important and significant moment for Yamaha as we celebrate victory in the WorldSSP Manufacturers’ Championship with the all-new R9 in its very first season. It has been a remarkable year for the R9, which started out with Stefano Manzi taking victory in the very first race back in Australia. The package has impressed across the season, with a combined 14 victories between Manzi and Can Oncu, as well as strong performances from Lucas Mahias, and rookies Roberto Garcia and Aldi Satya Mahendra. Thank you to our teams, Pata Ten Kate Racing, Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros WorldSSP team and GMT94 Yamaha for their hard work and determination. Congratulations also must go to our Motorsport Division colleagues for developing a race bike that could win in its very first season, as well as assembling a rider line-up capable of achieving this remarkable result. Fingers crossed for the ‘Triple Crown’!”
